Contentment Island, an approximately 140-acre upper-end residential community on Smith
Mountain Lake, was started in 1989 with the bulk of the infrastructure completed by the
later part of 1990. This infrastructure consisted of the water system, sufficient to
support the entire Contentment Island Community, paved road system, clubhouse and tennis
courts, shoreline rip-rapping, engineering, soil work, lot surveying and recordation, and
certain other procedures that were necessary for the sale of single family lots. A pool
was constructed in 1999.
