The Grove is a Greek Revival plantation house completed in 1854, built with bricks made on site, designed for Confederate General Jubal A. Early's brother-in-law John Stafford Hale and his second wife Margaret Ingles Saunders Hale. The property includes ten acres in the heart of Rocky Mount within walking distance of Franklin Memorial Hospital, the historic Farmers' Market, banks, shops, restaurants, parks, the Franklin County Library, the Franklin Center and other area ammenities. The Grove is a famous and well-preserved historic mansion with a park-like setting in a thriving small "Main Street" community. Rocky Mount sits among the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains in south-central Virginia, half an hour from Smith Mountain Lake to the east and the city of Roanoke to the northwest. Within three hours by car are Richmond, The Homestead and The Greenbrier Resorts, Charlottesville, Lexington, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Chapel Hill, Durham and Charlotte.
